The patient navigator is an important member of the highly trained patient care team at Tennessee Urology. Working closely with each patient’s urologist, our navigators play an essential role, guiding and supporting patients through their prostate cancer journey. This is a free, personalized service that is part of Tennessee Urology’s mission to provide each patient with a superior experience.
Our navigator will provide primary resources such as arranging next level care following surgery and providing information and guidance that patients need to schedule specialists appointments and additional diagnostic imaging. They can also answer medication questions.
Sylvia Waters, RN, oncology nurse navigator, and her team provide patients and their families with timely access to comprehensive prostate cancer treatment and an efficient referral process for the resources they need. Sylvia has 22 years of nursing experience with a surgical background. She has started brachy and robotic programs in the operating room where she was a urology coordinator. She has been working with radiation oncology for the past 4 years where she has helped patients prepare for IMRT and Brachy therapies and has worked directly with radiation oncologists to help set up treatment plans.
Sylvia says the following about all the patients she encounters: “I believe that every patient that comes through our doors should have access to the most up to date information so that they can choose a treatment that is best for them. This, of course, starts with the physician, but it is my job to assist the patient in making a decision that he and his family are confident in.” Sylvia does this through making appointments with other providers, answering questions about treatment, financial assistance, and communicating with our care team.
She is a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN and Hiwassee College in Madisonville, TN. She is also a member of the Knoxville Charter of AONN and is currently the Vice President.
Sylvia has extensive experience in the following areas: Managing urological services
and training staff, operating room nurse, robotic surgery, hand assisted surgeries, IPP,
AUS, and is a laser safety officer.
