Ultrasound

An Image You Can Count On

Our offices are equipped with sophisticated imaging modalities including ultrasound to provide our patients with efficient and timely results.

What Is Ultrasound?

Woman performing ultrasound to the manAn ultrasound is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of organs and blood vessels. With ultrasound, no radiation is involved. Ultrasound uses a special gel and a transducer that sends out sound waves and then receives the waves back again. These sound waves are converted to images that are displayed on a monitor and are then stored and sent to a urologist to interpret. Medical ultrasound is an invaluable tool for detecting abnormalities or assuring doctors of normal anatomy by using a safe and easy test for patients regardless of age.
Ultrasound provides physicians with speedy diagnostic tools to support the patient treatment plan. Most results are available the same day the ultrasound test is performed. All imaging is done by specially-trained sonographers in our convenient outpatient settings.

Who Performs the Ultrasound Exam?

A sonogram is another term for an ultrasound. All ultrasound examinations are performed by a technologist called a sonographer with highly specialized training. These providers hold the credentials of RDMS, which signifies that they are Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. In addition, they have passed rigorous training and maintain a high level of continuing medical education (CME).

Common Uses for Ultrasound

Because it is noninvasive and emits no radiation, ultrasound has become the test of choice to evaluate:

  • The kidneys and surrounding organs for any masses or unusual appearances such as swelling, tumors, or stones.
  • The pelvis. With a full bladder, the ultrasound can see certain structures such as the bladder, bladder wall, and prostate.
  • The scrotum for any masses such as testicular tumors and the surrounding contents for abnormalities such as varicoceles and hydroceles.

Ultrasound Department Accreditation

Our ultrasound department is accredited through the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). This AIUM Accreditation sets our practice apart as a national leader in urologic ultrasound. Practices accredited by the AIUM have demonstrated competency in every aspect of their operation including personnel education, training and experience, document storage and record keeping, policies and procedures, safeguarding patients, ultrasound personnel, equipment instrumentation, quality assurance, and case studies.
